For guidance and reflection - there are no to-do’s on this page.
Prerequisites
1️⃣ Your calls happen smoothly.
- Show up for every meeting!!
- Show up on time.
- Set an example and prepare for each meeting in advance.
- Try to avoid rescheduling any meetings in the first month.
- Send your mentee reminders to prep ~1 day before your meetings for at least the first month.
- Establish regular meetings (continued mentorship stage).
Mentees have found unreliable mentors demotivating in past programmes.
2️⃣ You build a comfortable relationship with your mentee.
- Spending time getting to know your mentees as people (and organisers, of course) is important!
- Share your ideas, details about your EA journey, and other things in your life with them. This is key for building trust and familiarity.
- Once your mentees feel comfortable and relaxed around you, it will be easier for them to ask questions and share what’s on their minds.
- This is particularly important for mentees from underrepresented backgrounds in EA or with lower social confidence.
- Mentees tend to enjoy OSP meetings more if they get on well with their mentor.
Adding Value
Group organisers have different strengths and weaknesses. As such, instead of following step-by-step instructions, an excellent mentor should explore which ways of adding value are most useful for their mentees, and then double down on those.
